Ch 04 The Omnipresence of God

I. GOD IS EVERYWHERE.

Psa_139:7-10 — "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."

Jer_23:23-24 "Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord."

Act_17:24-28 — "God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of Heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands. Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation: that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also of his offspring." (See also Isa_57:15.)

Proposition: God is everywhere. He is in all parts of the universe and near each individual. In Him each individual lives and moves and has his being.

II. GOD IS NOT EVERYWHERE IN THE SAME SENSE.

Joh_14:28
— "Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away and come again unto you. If ye love me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I."

Joh_20:17 — "Jesus said unto her, touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God, and your God."

Eph_1:20 — "Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places."

Rev_21:2-3; Rev_21:10; Rev_21:22-23 — "And I, John, saw the holy city, new

Jerusalem, coming down from God out of Heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof."

Rev_22:1; Rev_22:3 — "And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall serve him."

Proposition: God is in some places in a way that He is not in other places.

( Isa_66:1 — "Thus said the Lord, the heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me, and where is the place of my rest?") There is a fullness and manifestation of His presence in some places that doesn't exist in others. Heaven is the place where, at the present time, the presence and glory of God is especially and visibly manifested.

Mar_1:9-11 — "And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, thou art my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased." God the Father is especially manifested in heaven. God the Son has been especially manifested on earth. (See also Joh_3:13, the entire gospels and "the Angel of the Lord" in the O.T.) God the Son is now in heaven.

( Act_7:56; Eph_1:20 and many other passages.) God the Holy Spirit is manifested everywhere: (a) in nature ( Gen_1:2; Psa_104:30); (b) in all believers ( Joh_14:16-17; Rom_8:9); and (c)with unbelievers ( Joh_16:7-11). Through the Spirit, the Father and the Son dwell in the believer ( Joh_14:17; Joh_14:19-20; Joh_14:23). (See also Mat_28:19-20.)
