conscience. i.e. conviction. Greek. suneidesis, but the texts read (first occurance) sunnetheia, custom (see Joh_18:39. Joh_11:16). The meaning is much the same. Having been so long accustomed to believe the idol to have a real existence, they still regard the sacrifice as a real one.

defiled = polluted. Greek. moluno. Only here and Rev_3:4; Rev_14:4.
