rudder bands = lashings of the rudders.

bands. Greek. zeukteria. The tackle by which the paddles were lashed to the hull when the ship was at anchor. Only here.

mainsail = foresail. Greek. artemon. Only here. The mainsail had been thrown overboard (Act_27:19).
