themselves = them, i.e. the anchors. They "slipped" the anchors.

rudder bands = lashings of the rudders.
rudder. Greek. pidalion. Only here and Jam_3:4. There were two great paddles, one on either side, used for steering.
bands. Greek. zeukteria. The tackle by which the paddles were lashed to the hull when the ship was at anchor. Only here.
hoised = hoisted. Greek. epairo. Generally take up, or lift up. Act_1:9; Act_2:14, &c.
mainsail = foresail. Greek. artemon. Only here. The mainsail had been thrown overboard (Act_27:19).
