words: or, prophecies (verses: Jer_1:4, Jer_1:9, Jer_1:1, Jer_2:4, &c.) Compare Jer_36:1, Jer_36:2; but better "words", as the historic portions are also Jehovah's words. Compare Amo_1:1. Jeremiah. Hebrew. y'irm e yahu = whom Jehovah raises up, or launches forth.



Hilkiah. Not the high priest of that name, who was of the line of Eleazar (1Ch_6:4, 1Ch_6:13); whereas Anathoth belonged to that of Ithamar (1Ch_24:3, 1Ch_24:6). Compare 2Ch 34.



of the priests. Beside Jeremiah, Nathan (1Ki_4:6), Ezekiel (Jer_1:3), and probably Zechariah (Jer_1:1) were of priestly origin.



Anathoth. Now 'Anata, three miles north-east of Jerusalem. Jeremiah was persecuted there before he prophesied in Jerusalem (Jer_11:21; Jer_12:6). This prepared him for later conflicts (Compare Jer_12:5, Jer_12:6).
