forthwith = immediately. Greek euthus.
blood and water. The question of the physical cause of the Lord's death has been much discussed; but we need not seek a natural explanation of what John records as a miraculous sign. The blood and water may have been symbolical of the sprinkling with blood and cleansing with water of the Old Covenant. See Heb_9:12-14, Heb_9:19-22. 1Jn_5:6, 1Jn_5:8.
