Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6, for what is written; e.g. an account (Luk_16:6, Luk_16:7); the Pentateuch (Joh_5:47); Epistles (Act_28:21); the whole Scripture (2Ti_3:15). Hence, used of general literature such as the Talmudical writings (here, and in Act_26:24). Compare our term, "man of letters", and see Act_4:13.
