There was, &c. = But there was. This commences the second part of the Lord's address to the Pharisees, against their tradition making void God's word as to the dead, which may be seen in Psa_6:5; Psa_30:9; Psa_31:17; Psa_88:11; Psa_115:17; Psa_146:4. Ecc_9:6, Ecc_9:10; Ecc_12:7. Isa_38:17-19, &c. It is not called a "parable", because it cites a notable example of the Pharisees' tradition, which had been brought from Babylon.
