birth = begetting. Greek. gennesis. Occurs only here and Luk_1:14, used of the Father.



Jesus (Omit. by Tr. [WH] Rm.)



Christ. Hebrew Messiah. So translated in Joh_1:41; Joh_4:25.



on this wise: i.e. not begotten, as in the cases recorded in verses: Mat_1:2-16.



was espoused = bad been betrothed. By divine ordering, so that the two lines, through Solomon and Nathan, might be united and exhausted in Messiah. before. Greek. prin. Occurs seven times (Mat_26:34, Mat_26:75. Mar_14:72. Luk_22:61; Joh_4:49; Joh_8:58; Joh_14:9); prin e, Occurs seven times (Mat_1:18. Mar_14:30. Luk_2:26; Luk_22:34. Act_2:20; Act_7:2; Act_25:16). In eleven of the fourteen passages where this word occurs the events did take place. In the other three, one was miraculously prevented (Joh_4:49); the day of the Lord is absolutely certain (Act_2:20); the other was legally imperative (Act_25:16).



came together: as in 1Co_7:5.



the Holy Ghost. Greek. pneuma hagion = holy spirit: i.e. power from on high. Not "the Holy Spirit". See App-101.
