There are six words rendered poor or poverty in Proverbs: (1) rush = in want of necessaries of life (Pro_6:11; Pro_10:4, Pro_10:15; Pro_13:7, Pro_13:8, Pro_13:18, Pro_13:23; Pro_14:20; Pro_17:5; Pro_18:23; Pro_19:1, Pro_19:7, Pro_19:22; Pro_22:2, Pro_22:7; Pro_24:34; Pro_28:3, Pro_28:6, Pro_28:19, Pro_28:27; Pro_29:13; Pro_30:8; Pro_31:7). (2) dal = impoverished, reduced (Pro_10:15; Pro_14:31; Pro_19:4, Pro_19:17; Pro_22:9, Pro_22:16, Pro_22:22, Pro_22:22; Pro_28:3, Pro_8:11, Pro_8:15; Pro_29:7, Pro_29:14). (3) heser = in want (Pro_11:24; Pro_21:17; Pro_28:22). (4) 'anah = wretched (Pro_14:21). (5) 'ebyon = destitute, helpless; deficient in will and wealth (Pro_14:31). (6) yarash = dispossessed (Pro_20:13; Pro_23:21; Pro_30:9).



as one that travelleth = as a highwayman.



as an armed man = as a man with a shield. Compare Pro_21:33, Pro_21:34.
