open sepulchre = opened sepulchre; literally a tomb that has been opened, emitting noisomeness.



sepulchre. Greek. taphos. Only here, Mat_23:27, Mat_23:29; Mat_27:61, Mat_27:64, Mat_27:66; Mat_28:1. Applied to any place where dead bodies are deposited. Mnemeion, rendered "sepulchre", is found only in Gospels and Act_13:29, and means a monumental tomb. Compare Mat_27:60.
