Anthology of 3,000+ Classic Sermons: BonarH - Ordination of the Rev. Horatius Bonar (1839)

Subjects in this Topic:

"The Rev. Horatius Bonar, on whom their choice has fallen, is understood to be a young man of sincere piety—a ripe scholar—a well-instructed theologian—a devoted evangelist. Every thing, indeed, that is known of him, concurs to induce the hope, that both patrons and people will long have reason to congratulate themselves,—the former on the wisdom of their choice; the latter, on the possession of such a man for their pastor. Mr. Bonar's election took place on the 9th September, 1837; he was ordained by the Presbytery of Kelso, to the office of the ministry, on the 30th of November,—only four days after the opening of the Church; and he finally entered on the public discharge of his sacred duties on Sabbath the 3rd of December."

"...the moderator descends from the pulpit to that part of the church, (usually some roomy pew in the centre,) where the presentee, accompanied by the remanent members of the presbytery, is placed. The presentee kneels; and the moderator standing over him, offers up a solemn prayer, in the course of which he lays his hands, (the other brethren doing the same,) upon the head of the kneeling candidate—supplicating, at the same time, the Divine Majesty to grant to his servant the gift of the Holy Ghost."
