Originally a Dutch Reformed minister, Reverend Talmage became a Presbyterian minister and pastored the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. Very popular, some 5000 or more flocked to hear him each week. An estimated 20 million people read his sermons, published in 3000 newspapers throughout the world. Talmage was the prototype of oratorical preaching. He never used a pulpit, but paced up and down the platform while speaking - without notes!
