Which assaying to do (hēs pieran labontes). Literally, “of which taking trial” (second aorist active participle of lambanō, to take). The idiom peiran lambanein occurs in Deu 28:56, in N.T. only here and Heb 11:36, though a classical idiom (Demosthenes, etc.).
Were swallowed up (katepothēsan). First aorist passive indicative of katapinō, to drink down, to swallow down (Mat 23:24).
