For before they were at enmity between themselves (proupērchon gar en echthrāi ontes pros heautous). A periphrastic imperfect of the double compound prouperchō, an old verb, to exist (huparchō) previously (pro-), here alone in the N.T., with ontes (participle of eimi) added.
