Fausset Bible Dictionary: Hadrach, The Land of

Subjects in this Topic:

A region of Syria. (-2). Derived probably from HADAR or HADAD. (See HADAD.) Possibly another name for BIKATH AVEN (). Maurer says it means in Syrian enclosed, i.e. Coelo-Syria, the western interior part of Syria; or its capital (Jerome). Hengstenberg makes it a symbolical name of Persia, Zechariah thereby avoiding offence to the government under which he lived; from haad "strong", and raq "weak"; strong then, but soon to be weakened by Alexander its conqueror. But the context implies a Syrian region. Gesenius thinks Hadrach was a Syrian king.
