Joh 3:11. Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, verily, verily, I say unto thee) Three times this expression is used to Nicodemus.-οἴδαμεν, we know) Jesus does not associate with Himself John or any other man: ch. Joh 1:18, Joh 6:46, “No man hath seen God at any time; the only-begotten Son, etc., He hath declared Him:-not that any man hath seen the Father, save He which is of God, He hath seen the Father.” He speaks of Himself and of the Spirit. Comp. as to the Son, Joh 3:32, “What He hath seen and heard, that He testifieth:” as to the Holy Spirit, Joh 3:8; Joh 3:34, “He whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God; for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto Him;” ch. Joh 16:13, “The Spirit of truth-shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak;” [also ch. Joh 5:30, I can of mine own self do nothing; as I hear, I judge.]-λαλοῦμεν) That only is what we speak.-οὐ λαμβάνετε, ye do not receive) [in faith, to wit.-V. g.] The plural, as in Joh 3:2, [Nicodemus said] we know.
