This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

Mat 27:27. Ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν, the whole band) sc. even those soldiers who ought not then to have been present, and had not been so previously.[1191]-ΣΠΕῖΡΑΝ, band, Lat. spiram) Elsewhere the Greeks are wont to put a simple for the Latin i before a consonant, as in Πιλάτος, not ΠΕΙΛΆΤΟς, etc.; they wrote, however, ΣΠΕῖΡΑ, because it is thus nearest to ΠΕῖΡΑ, an attempt; σπεῖρω, to sow, etc.; to the sound of which they were accustomed.
