Mat 5:7. Ἐλεήμονες, the merciful) The Greek word ἔλεος, ruth, from which ἐλεήμονες is derived, corresponds to the Hebrew חסך,[177] and does not refer merely to miserable objects.
[177] חֶסֶד … (1) in a good sense, zeal towards any one, love, kindness, specially (a) of men amongst themselves, benignity, benevolence, as shown in mutual benefits; mercy, pity, when referring to those in misfortune: Gen 21:23; 2Sa 10:2. LXX. often ἔλεος.-GESENIUS.-(I. B.)
