Rev 21:11. Ὁ φωστὴρ) Hesychius, φωστὴρ, θυρίς. Isa 54:12, שמשתיך; the LXX., τὰς ἐπάλξεις σου, in the plural number. But ὁ φωστὴρ in the singular (comp. Gen 6:16) means a part in a building which is open to the air, or admitting the light of the sun (שמש), as windows are, or spaces between the (ἐπάλξεις) battlements of the walls: or, φωστὴρ is λύχνος, Rev 21:23. Φωστὴρ is not compounded of φῶς and τηρῶ, but it is a word derived from its own root.
