This Chapter Verse Commentaries:

Exo_1:19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women [are] not as the Egyptian women; for they [are] lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

Ver. 19. For they are lively.] By that "voice of the Lord which maketh the hinds to calve." {Psa_29:9} Lady Faith was their midwife: and she hath delivered the graves of their dead; {Heb_11:35} how much more wombs of their quick children! But we need the less wonder at the matter here reported, if that were true which Varro writeth of the Illyrian women; who, being at harvest work in the field, when they were near their time, would but step aside, and return again, bringing a child with them, as if they had found it behind the hedge. {a}
