Jer_2:14 [Is] Israel a servant? [is] he a homeborn [slave]? why is he spoiled?

Ver. 14. Is Israel a servant?] sc., Bought with money. {a}

Is he a homeborn slave?
] Verna, a slave by birth; q.d., if he be either of the two, he may thank himself. He was my son, nay, my spouse, if he could have kept him so; but he hath sold himself to commit wickedness, and I have therefore sold him into the hands of the Chaldeans. Lo! this is the product of his forsaking me, the fountain of living waters, &c.

{a} Servus empticius, purchased slave.
