47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.



Ver. 47. I judge him not] viz. While I am here on earth. I sustain another person now, that men may come apace to me without fear. Some ancient heretics held, that God in the time of the law was a severe judge; and now, in the days of the gospel, he was all made of mercy and mildness. But the apostle saith somewhat otherwise, Heb_2:1-3. God is more peremptory in his judgments now than ever of old. And, Joh_12:29, he telleth us that even our God also, as well as the God of the Jews, "is a consuming fire."
