3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.



Ver. 3. Because he was little of stature] ôõôèïò áíçñ : Homer. St Paul was but a little man (say some, and thence had his name) but of a notable spirit. Deus maximus est in minimis, saith one, et saepe compensat defectus corporis ingenii dotibus. God is much seen in small things; and he many times recompenseth defects in the body with gifts of the mind. Hence that of the poet,



" In parvo regnat corpore virtus."
