Num_31:18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
Ver. 18. That have not known a man.] As far as they could conjecture by their age. But the way of a man with a maid, is one of Solomon’s secrets. {Pro_30:19} Of Rebecca it is noted, that she went for a maid, and she was so. {Gen_24:16} But Quartilla, the strumpet in Petronius, was not ashamed to say, Iunonem meam iratam habeam, si unquam me meminerim virginem fuisse, {a} That she could not remember that ever she was a maid. And what a base slander was that cast upon our religion by an impudent Jesuit, Sylvester Petrasancta, Puellas plerumque corruptas nuptui dari in reformato Evangelio, {b} That few maids amongst us come clear to marriage.
