Chapter Level Commentary: IN A B the superscription runs: Ἰωάννου (B.: - ανου ) ; in other codd.: ἐπιστολὴ Ἰωάννου πρώτη . The Rec. is: Ιωάννου τοῦ ἀποστόλου ἐπιστολὴ καθολικὴ πρώτη .

CHAPTER 1

1Jn_1:1. Instead of ἑωράκαμεν , Tisch. 7 has, both here and hereafter, and 1Jn_3:6, 1Jn_4:20, accepted the form ἑορ .; on this form, see Ph. Buttmann, Ausf. griech. Gramm. 1819, § 84, Anm. 11, note; Al. Buttmann (p. 56) says: “The form ἑόρακα , it is true, is often presented by the mss., but has not, up to the present, been received by the editors.”—1Jn_1:2. Cod. B has before ἑωράκαμεν the relative , perhaps through mistake from 1Jn_1:1; 1Jn_1:3; even Buttm, has not accepted it.—1Jn_1:3. ἀπαγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν ] Rec., according to G K and several others, Copt. and others, Oec. Aug. Beda (Tisch.); according to A B C, however, with Lachm., a καί is to be inserted after ἀπαγγέλλομεν ,—it seems to have been omitted as superfluous on account of the following ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς ; in Thph. it reads: καὶ ἀπαγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν ; so also à , in which it reads: ἀκηκ . καὶ ἑωράκ . καὶ ἀπαγγέλλομεν .—1Jn_1:4. Instead of γράφομεν ὑμῖν (Rec. Tisch. Lachm. ed. maj.), A* B à read γράφομεν ἡμεῖς (Lachm. ed. min. Buttm.); Lücke, de Wette, Ewald, and Reiche consider this reading as unsuitable; differently Brückner; the change of ἡμεῖς to ὑμῖν can at any rate be more easily explained than that of ὑμῖν to ἡμεῖς .

χαρὰ ὑμῶν ] Rec., according to A C K, several others, Copt. etc. etc. (Tisch.); Lachm., following B G à and others, reads ἡμῶν ; hardly correct.—1Jn_1:5. καὶ ἔστιν αὕτη ] according to B C G K à and others, Syr. Thph. Oec. (Tisch.), instead of the Rec. καὶ αὕτη ἐστίν , according to A, Vulg. (Lachm.). The Rec. is an alteration of the original reading; comp. 1Jn_2:25, 1Jn_3:11.

ἀγγελία ] so Lachm. and Tisch. (approved of by Reiche and most modern commentators), following almost the entire number of authorities: A B G K, by far the most of the others (Thph. in Comm. Oec.), instead of the Rec. ἐπαγγελία , which only a few codices support; perhaps C; according to Lachm. C has ἀγγελία ; according to Tisch.: ἐπαγγελία . Paulus considers ἀγγελία as an explanatory gloss from 1Jn_3:11; so de Wette; but, on the contrary, ἐπαγγελία is a correction of ἀγγελία , which otherwise does not appear in the N. T. except in 1Jn_3:11, where, however, the same correction is found. The original reading of à is ἀπαγγελίας ; later it corrects this to ἀγγελία ; others have corrected it to ἀγάπη τῆς ἐπαγγελίας . Socin thinks that ἐπαγγελία should be read.—1Jn_1:7. Instead of ἀλλήλων , A* (?) Tol. some lat. codices, Aeth. Clem. Didym. Tert. read αὐτοῦ , which is plainly a correction, as ἀλλήλων does not seem conformable to the train of thought; see the comment on this passage. After Ἰησοῦ the Rec., following A G K and others, Vulg. etc., has Χριστοῦ , which is wanting in B C à ; Lachm. and Tisch. have omitted it; Reiche would have it retained; the addition is easily explained, comp. 1Jn_5:3.—1Jn_1:8. Instead of οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν (Rec. after B G à , Vulg. etc.), Lachm. and Tisch., following A C K and others, read ἐν ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔστιν ; perhaps the former is a correction, after 1Jn_1:10.—1Jn_1:9. Instead of καθαρίσῃ is found, in A, h. some min. (perhaps also in C**): καθαρίσει , which, however, has too little evidence to be regarded as genuine.
