Ἀκούων
] is simply to hear, as in all the other cases in which it is here used; and neither, with Grotius, are we to supply
καὶ

, nor, with Kuinoel and Bleek, to take it in the sense of admittere.
The care for this world, which (Mat_13:39; Mat_13:49) extends even to the setting up of the promised kingdom (
τούτου
is a correct gloss), is the care which men cherish with regard to temporal objects and temporal affairs, as contrasted with the higher concern, the striving after the Messiah’s kingdom (Mat_6:33). Comp. Tim. Mat_4:10.
ἀπάτη
] the deceitfulness of those riches, which (personified) delude men with their enticements; not: “Delectatio, qua divitiae animos hominum afficiunt” (Kuinoel), a classical meaning of
ἀπάτη
(Polyb. ii. 56. 12, iv. 20. 5) which is foreign to the New Testament, and which in this instance is as unnecessary as it is flat. 2Th_2:10; Heb_3:13.
