Mat_27:47 A heartless Jewish witticism founded upon a silly malicious perversion of the words ἠλί , ἠλί , and not a misunderstanding of their meaning on the part of the Roman soldiers (Euthymius Zigabenus), or illiterate Jews (Theophylact, Erasmus, Olshausen, Lange), or Hellenists (Grotius), for the whole context introduces us to one scene after another of envenomed mockery; see Mat_27:49.
