Servants; the word is not the same which Paul useth, Col_3:22, but may well comprehend the servants he speaks of, as implying not only slaves, but those that were made free, yet continued still in the family; and so signifies servants of whatsoever condition.
Be subject to your masters with all fear; not only reverence of masters, and fear of offending them, is to be understood, but fear of God, as appears by the parallel place, Col_3:22: see Eph_6:5-7.
Not only to the good and gentle; by good he means not gracious or holy, but, as the next word explains it, gentle, just, equal.
But also to the froward; morose, crabbed, unjust, unmerciful.
