GENESIS CHAPTER 25

Abraham’s sons by Keturah, Gen_25:1-4. Isaac inherits his father’s estate, Gen_25:5. Provision for the other sons, Gen_25:6. Abraham’s age, Gen_25:7; death, Gen_25:8; burial, Gen_25:9,10. God blesseth Isaac, Gen_25:11. The posterity of Ishmael, Gen_25:12-15. His age and death, Gen_25:17. Their habitation, Gen_25:18. The generations of Isaac, Gen_25:19. His age when married, Gen_25:20. He prays for children; God answers, Gen_25:21. Two children struggle in the womb; Rebekah inquires of the Lord, Gen_25:22. God gives the reason, Gen_25:23. She delivered of twins, Gen_25:24. The first-born red and hairy; his name, Gen_25:25. His brother takes him by the heel; his name: Isaac’s age when they were born, Gen_25:26. The eldest a cunning hunter; the other a plain man, Gen_25:27. Isaac loves the eldest; Rebekah the youngest, Gen_25:28. The eldest sells his birth right for red pottage, and is called Edom, Gen_25:30-32. Confirms the sale by an oath, Gen_25:33. Despising his birthright, Gen_25:34.

After Sarah’s death and Isaac’s marriage Abraham took a wife, ( a secondary wife, or a concubine, as she is called, Gen_25:6, and 1Ch_1:32), not from any inordinate lust, which his age and eminent grace may sufficiently evince, but from a desire of more children, and of accomplishing God’s promise concerning the great multiplication of his seed.

Keturah was a distinct person from Hagar, as appears from Gen_25:6, and Gen_25:12, and, as it seems, of better quality, and younger, for Hagar was now eighty years old, and not likely to be a mother of six children.
