God went up from him; either locally and visibly, to wit, in that human shape in which he appeared to him; or by withdrawing the signs of his special presence, as Gen_17:22 Jud_13:20; as on the contrary God is said to come down, not by change of place, but by some signal manifestation of his presence and favour, as Exo_3:8 Num_11:17.
