CHÆREAS (AV [Note: Authorized Version.] Chereas) held command at the fortress of Gazara, i.e. probably Jazer in the trans-Jordanic territory (see 1Ma_5:6-8). He was slain upon the capture of Gazara by Judas Maccabæus (2Ma_10:32-38).
