James Hastings Dictionary of the Bible: Flood

Subjects in this Topic:

FLOOD.—See Deluge. And notice that the word is used generally for a stream or river, as Isa_44:3 ‘I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground’ (RV [Note: Revised Version.] ‘streams’). Sometimes a particular river is meant, the Euphrates, the Nile, or the Jordan. (1) The Euphrates is referred to in Jos_24:2 (‘your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood,’ RV [Note: Revised Version.] ‘beyond the River’) Jos_24:14-15, 2Es_13:44, 1Ma_7:8. (2) The Nile in Psa_78:44, Amo_8:8 to Amo_9:5, Jer_46:7-8. (3) The Jordan in Psa_66:6 (‘they went through the flood on foot’). The word is also frequently used in AV [Note: Authorized Version.] as now, of a torrent, as Psa_69:2 ‘I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me’ (Heb. shibboleth, the word which the Ephraimites pronounced sibboleth).
