James Hastings Dictionary of the Bible: Alexander

Subjects in this Topic:

ALEXANDER.—1. Son of Simon of Cyrene; like his brother Rufus, evidently a well-known man (Mar_15:21 only). 2. One of the high-priestly family (Act_4:6). 3. The would-he spokesman of the Jews in the riot at Ephesus, which endangered them as well as the Christians (Act_19:33); not improbably the same as the coppersmith (2Ti_4:14) who did St. Paul ‘much evil,’ and who was probably an Ephesian Jew; possibly the same as the Alexander of 1Ti_1:20 (see Hymenæus), in which case we may regard him as an apostate Christian who had relapsed into Judaism.

A. J. Maclean.
