James Hastings Dictionary of the Bible: Helez

Subjects in this Topic:

HELEZ.—1. One of David’s thirty heroes (2Sa_23:26). He is described as ‘the Paltite,’ i.e. a native of Beth-pelet in the Negeb of Judah (cf. Jos_15:27, Neh_11:26). But in the two parallel lists (1Ch_11:27; 1Ch_27:10) both the Hebrew text and the LXX [Note: Septuagint.] read ‘the Pelonite.’ The former reading is further inconsistent with 1Ch_27:10, where Helez is expressly designated as ‘of the children of Ephraim.’ He was in command of the military guard appointed for the seventh monthly course of the Temple service. See Pelonite. 2. A Judahite (1Ch_2:39).
