James Hastings Dictionary of the Bible: Jarmuth

Subjects in this Topic:

JARMUTH.—1. A royal city of the Canaanites (Jos_10:3 etc.), in the Shephçlab, assigned to Judah (Jos_15:35). It is probably identical with ‘Jermucha’ of the Onomasticon, 10 Roman miles from Elentheropolis, on the Jerusalem road. This is now Khirbet Yarmûk, between Wâdy es-Sarûr and Wâdy es-Sant, about 8 miles N. of Beit Jibrîn. 2. A city in Issachar, allotted to the Gershonite Levites (Jos_21:29, LXX [Note: Septuagint.] B Remmath). It corresponds to Ramoth in 1Ch_6:73, and Remeth appears in Jos_19:21 among the cities of Issachar. Guthe suggests er-Râmeh, about 11 miles S. W. of Jenîn, but this is uncertain.
