JESUS, the Gr. form of the name Joshua or Jeshua, is employed as a designation of—1. Joshua the son of Nun (AV [Note: Authorized Version.] of 1Ma_2:55, 2Es_7:37, Sir_46:1, Act_7:45, Heb_4:8, in all of which passages RV [Note: Revised Version.] has Joshua). 2.1Es_5:11 = Jeshua of Ezr_2:6 and Neh_7:11. 3.1Es_5:24 = Jeshua of Ezr_2:36 and Neh_7:39. 4. Jeshua (Joshua), the high priest (1Es_5:5; 1Es_5:8; 1Es_5:48; 1Es_5:56; 1Es_5:68; 1Es_5:70; 1Es_6:2; 1Es_9:19, Sir_49:12). 5. A Levite (1Es_5:26; 1Es_5:58; 1Es_8:63; 1Es_9:48) who in Ezr_2:40; Ezr_3:9 is called Jeshua. 6. An ancestor of our Lord (Luk_3:29 RV [Note: Revised Version.] , where AV [Note: Authorized Version.] has Jose). 7. Jesus, son of Sir_8:1-19.
