James Hastings Dictionary of the Bible: Mahli

Subjects in this Topic:

MAHLI.—In Exo_6:18, Num_3:20, 1Ch_24:25; 1Ch_24:28, it is the name of a son of Merari, Levi’s youngest son. In 1Ch_23:23; 1Ch_24:30 a son of Mushi, Mahli’s brother, bears the same name. Ezr_8:18 speaks of ‘a man of discretion (see Ish-sechel), of the sons of Mahli … and Sherebiah,’ etc. 1Es_8:47 [Mooli] drops ‘and,’ thus identifying this son of Mahli with Sherebiah. In Num_3:33; Num_26:58 Mahli’s descendants are called ‘the family of the Mahlites.’ According to 1Ch_23:22, these Mahlites were descended from the daughters of Eleazar, the elder son of the Mahli mentioned in Exo_6:19. Eleazar left no male offspring. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, therefore took them in marriage, and prevented the extinction of their father’s name.
