James Hastings Dictionary of the Bible: Nadab

Subjects in this Topic:

NADAB.1. The eldest son of Aaron (Exo_6:23, Num_3:2; Num_26:60, 1Ch_6:3; 1Ch_24:1); accompanied Moses to Sinai (Exo_24:1; Exo_24:9 f.); was admitted to the priestly office (Exo_28:1); and on the very day of his consecration (Lev_10:12 ff. compared with ch. 9) he and Abihu perished (Lev_10:1-2, Num_3:4; Num_26:61, 1Ch_24:2) for offering ‘strange fire.’ Wherein the transgression of Nadab and Abihu is supposed to have consisted is not clear. It is often suggested that ‘strange’ fire means fire taken from a common source instead of from the altar (cf. Lev_16:12, Num_16:46). 2. A Jerahmeelite (1Ch_2:28; 1Ch_2:30). 3. A Benjamite (1Ch_8:30 = 1Ch_9:35). 4. See next article.
