UNTOWARD.—‘Untoward’ is ‘not toward,’ i.e. not well disposed. It occurs in Act_2:40 ‘this untoward generation.’ Cf. ‘untoward to all good … forward to evil’—Judgement of the Synode at Dort, p. 32. The subst. ‘untowardness’ occurs in the heading of Isa_28:1-29, Hos_6:1-11. The word is still occasionally used, but in the more modern sense of ‘unfortunate’—as ‘an untoward accident.’
