ACHMETHA.—The Ecbatana of the Greeks and Romans, modern Hamadan. It was the capital of Media (in Old Persian Haghmatâna). It is mentioned but once in the canonical books (Ezr_6:2), as the place where the archives of the reign of Cyrus were deposited. It is several times mentioned in the Apocrypha (2Ma_9:3 Tob_3:7; Tob_6:7; Tob_14:13 f., Jdt_1:1 ff.).
