In the typical language of Scripture, the love of the Redeemer to the Church is vividly alluded to in the expression "the bride, the Lamb's wife" (Rev_21:9). Christ himself is also called "the bridegroom" in the same sense (Joh_3:29). The figure, under various and extended forms, is of frequent occurrence in the O.T., to denote the union between Jehovah and the Jewish nation. SEE CANTICLES; SEE NUPTIALS.
