Êáñíåßí
, Vulg. Carnaïm), a large and fortified city in the country east of Jordan — "the land of Galaad" — containing a "temple" (

K.). It was besieged and taken by Judas Maccableus (1Ma_5:26; 1Ma_5:43-44). Under the name of CARNION (
ôὸ Êáñíßïí
) the same occurrence is related in 2Ma_12:21; 2Ma_12:26, the temple being called the ATARGATEION (

). This enables us to identify it with ASHTEROTH-KARNAIM SEE ASHTEROTH-KARNAIM (q.v.).
