( ὕðáôïò , i.e. highest in office), a title applied (1Ma_15:16) to Lucius (q.v.), the Roman officer, whose communication to Ptolemy is there cited. The Sept. elsewhere uses the same Greek term as a rendering of the Chald. àֲçִùְׁãִּøְôְּðַéï , satraps (“princes,” Dan_3:2-3), and äִã áְøַéï , viziers (“counsellors, Dan_6:7, etc.). It is often used by classical Greek writers for the Roman consul. SEE ROME.
