a Presbyterian minister, was born at Schenectady, N.Y., January 1, 1794. After receiving a preparatory education, he graduated from Union College in 1812; then entered upon the study of medicine, but soon relinquished it for theology, and in 1816 was ordained pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Blooming Grove, Orange County, N.Y., where his labors were blessed in the ingathering of many souls. In 1829 he was appointed professor of theology in the Allegheny Theological Seminary, and in 1837 professor of ecclesiastical history and Church polity in the Auburn Theological Seminary. In 1844 he again took charge of the Blooming Grove Church, and in 1847 accepted the chair of Church history in the Union Theological Seminary. For several of the last years of his life he occupied a retired relation. He died in New York, October 29, 1880. See New York Observer, November 11, 1880; Genesis Cat. of Auburn Theol.
