( ἀíÜãù , to lead or bring up), in the older writers on interpretation, is one of the four senses of Scripture, viz. the literal, allegorical, anagogical, and tropical. The anagogical sense is when the sacred text is explained with regard to eternal life; for example, the rest of the Sabbath, in the anagogical sense, signifies the repose of everlasting happiness.
