(Heb. Chiupham',
çåּôָí
, according to Gesenius perh. coast-man, according to Furst screened; Sept. omits, but some eds. have
Ï᾿öáì
; Vulg. Hupham), a person apparently mentioned as one of the sons of Benjamin (Num_26:39); elsewhere less correctly called HUPPIM (Gen_46:24). His descendants are called HUPHIMITES (Hebrew Chuphanzi',
çåּôָîַé
, Sept. omits, but some eds.
Ï᾿öáìß
,Vulg. Huphamitce,Num_26:39). B.C. 1856. The name Huppim being in the plural (Heb. Chuppim',
çֻôַּéí
, coverings; Sept. omits in Gen_46:21, but some copies have
᾿Èöìßí
or
Ï᾿öéìßì
; as a son of Bela; Vulg. Ophim.), suggests the possibility that it is a contraction for Huphamites. SEE SHUPPIM.
The only other passages where it occurs are 1Ch_7:12 (Sept.
Á᾿öåßì
, Vulg. Hapham) and 15 (Sept.
Á᾿ööåßì
, Vulg. Happhim), in both which it has the same fraternity with Shuppim, and in the latter mention is made of a sister Maachah as married to Machir, the son of Manasseh by a concubine, while in the former Huppim and Shuppim are expressly called the sons of Ir, apparently a son of Benjamin additional to the three mentioned in 1Ch_7:6, but probably not the Iri mentioned in 1Ch_7:7. Hence results the probability that Hupham, whose descendants are thus spoken of, was a grandson of Benjamin, and consequently a son of one of his five sons expressly named in order in 1Ch_8:1-2, but whether of the fourth or fifth is uncertain. SEE BENJAMIN.
