[many Jesh'anah] (Heb. Yeshanah', éְùָׁðָä , old, q.d. Ðáëáéüðïëéò ; Sept. É᾿åóõíÜ v.r. Á᾿íÜ ), a city of the kingdom of Israel, taken with its suburbs from Jeroboam by Abijah, and mentioned as situated near Bethel and Ephraim (2Ch_13:19). It appears to be the “village Isanas” ( É᾿óÜíáò ), mentioned by Josephus as the scene of Herod's encounter with Pappus, the general of Antigonus, in Samaria (Ant. 14, 15, 12; compare É᾿óáíÜ , Ant. 8,11, 3). It is not mentioned by Jerome in the Onomasticon, unless we accept the conjecture of Reland (Paloest. p. 861). that “Jethaba, urbs antiqua Judaea” is at once a corruption and a translation of the name Jeshana. According to Schwarz (Palestine, p. 158), it is the modern village al-Sanin, two miles west of Bethel; but no such name appears on Zimmermann's map, unless it be Ain Sinia, a village surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees, with vegetable gardens watered from a well, situated at a fork of the valley about a mile N.E. of Jufila (Robinson's Researches, 3, 80).
