( êáèßóìáôá , sittings) is a name which, in the early Church, according to Suicer, was applied to certain parts of holy Scripture, because, during the reading of them, the people sat. Other portions of Scripture were entitled óôÜóåéò (standings), because, during the reading of them, the people stood. It was usual in the early Church for all worshippers to stand during the: reading of the gospels and the singing of the psalms.
