( ðִòִø , na'ar, often rendered "young man," etc.; N.T. ðáéäÜñéïí , a little child, the last occurring only Joh_6:9, and " child" in Mat_11:16; both terms being originally without respect to sex). The Heb. word occasionally thus rendered in the Auth.Vers., although occasionally standing for a girl or maiden (Gen_24:14; Gen_24:16; Gen_24:28; Gen_24:55; Gen_34:3; Gen_34:12; Deu_22:15 sq.), for which the fem. noun ( ðִòֲøָä , naarah') is usually employed, properly denotes a boy, being prob. a primitive word. It is spoken of an infant just born (Exodus ii, 6; Jdg_13:5; Jdg_13:7; 1Sa_4:21), of a boy not yet full grown (Gen_21:16 sq.; Gen_22:12; Isa_7:16; Isa_8:4), and of a youth nearly twenty years old (Gen_34:19; Gen_41:12; 1Ki_3:7; 2Sa_18:5; 2Sa_18:29).
