(Heb. Shamhuth',
ùִׁîְäåּú
, prob. desolation; Sept.
Óáìáώè
v.r.
Óáëáώè
; Vulg. Samaoth), the fifth captain for the fifth month in David's arrangement of his army (1Ch_27:8). B.C. 1020. His designation
äִéַּæְøָç
, hay-yizrach, i.e. the Yizrach, is perhaps for
äִæִּøְçַé
, haz-zarchi, the Zarhite, or descendant of Zerah, the son of Judah. From a comparison of the lists in 1Ch_11:27, it would seem that Shamhuth is the same as Shammoth (q.v.) the Harorite.
